August is National Wellness Month
College is an exciting time of progress filled with new opportunities, experiences, and goals. With a focus on assignments, deadlines, and studying, students can easily neglect their own care. For college students, self-care can be put on the back burner until everything else is done.
August is National Wellness Month, and it reminds us that self-care is an important priority alongside schoolwork. Wellness is about more than just eating healthy and exercising; it is also about taking care of your mental and emotional well-being so you can feel your best throughout college and beyond.
East Ohio College (EOC) understands that students focus mainly on their studies, so we put together this blog with ways to take care of yourself that fit seamlessly into everyday life.
Wellness Doesn’t Have To Be Complicated
As a college student, you have enough on your plate without making a major lifestyle change. However, wellness doesn’t need to be complicated. In reality, small habits and consistency can make the most difference.
Here, we break the term “wellness” down into three distinct categories and give you tips on how to achieve them.
Emotional wellness
College brings a lot of emotions, including excitement, pride, nervousness, or overwhelm. These feelings can happen at the same time, which can lead to emotional exhaustion and confusion. That’s why it’s important to find ways to regulate your emotions. EOC suggests building a trusted support network you can talk to, journaling, or stepping away from work to do something that brings you joy.
Physical wellness
Getting enough sleep gives you a strong foundation for the day. A solid sleep schedule and time to rest your brain throughout the day can help you feel more regulated, prepared, and focused. A healthy diet and regular exercise are also important parts of physical well-being. Moving your body, in whatever way works for you, can give you mental clarity and release stress-reducing hormones.
Mental wellness
With all the responsibilities college students juggle daily, it’s easy to become overwhelmed without realizing it. Mental wellness involves giving your brain a break and managing stress. Sometimes the best thing to do is walk away for a moment, talk to a friend, listen to music, or take a break and come back with a clear head. Remember, you are worth more than your grades. Academic performance is important, but it does not define your worth.
Finding Balance as a Student
Emotional, mental, and physical well-being are all interconnected. When you’re exhausted, you’re more likely to feel overwhelmed or sluggish and have a harder time concentrating. That’s why wellness requires you to look at the bigger picture.
You don’t have to make big changes to your routine and life to feel a difference. Starting with small steps, such as going to bed earlier, writing in a journal, or cooking a meal rather than eating out, can make a significant difference long-term. National Wellness Month reminds us that taking care of yourself is nonnegotiable, and it doesn’t have to be the last thing on your to-do list.
As a college student, you understand that education is an investment in your future. Likewise, wellness is an investment in yourself.
