Santana Garcia – Student Highlight

Santana Garcia, a medical assisting student at East Ohio, can be found running all around campus. If she isn’t in class or working on her school work in the media center, she can be found helping out the staff around campus during her hours as a work-study. When asked what she was doing before she decided to come to East Ohio, she said, “I was working retail and just really thinking about what I wanted to do.” She then went on to say, “I think that’s the hardest part of life is figuring out what you want to do. I think that’s why it took me a little longer to decide what I want to do for college and what was best for me.” Going to college can be a hard choice to make. It’s always good to evaluate all your options before you make a big decision like that.

Santana was asked if this was in fact her first college experience or if she had attended any other colleges prior to East Ohio, she said “I didn’t attend any classes, but I applied and was accepted to another college, and I barely had help with the FAFSA or getting any grants, so it was a bit frustrating there.” We are so glad she decided to choose us! We then moved on to ask her why she chose East Ohio, she said that she chose East Ohio because of the small class sizes and Donna. “When she called me she was so nice and inviting, and if I had any questions she would answer them. I also liked the classes they offer.” When asked what her favorite classes were, she said, “My favorite teacher would probably be Mrs. Hedrick or Mr. Clutter.” Santana loves all of her instructors, but these were the two she had the most classes with and she loves their teaching styles.

She works hard in her classes, as a Medical Assistant, she will be able to work in doctors’ offices and hospitals, taking vitals, giving shots, and even doing blood draws. When we asked her why she chose her program, she has this to say. “I chose Medical Assisting because I love helping people and love giving myself obstacles to get over. I also wanted to get a taste of the medical field because I might come back to do Nursing or Medical Office Assisting.” She also said that she wants to be able to own her own house, have a family, work a full-time job, and be successful in everything she does. When asked what her ideal job was, she stated that she wanted to combine her previous education in Early Childhood Education with her Medical assisting career. “I want to be in a pediatrics office. It would be a mix of both the things I love.”

When asked if she would recommend East Ohio to a friend, she said, “I would for sure refer a friend! The admissions are easy, the staff is super nice, the classes are small, and there are opportunities.”
