Rashauna McKinnon – Student Highlight

Meet Clinical Medical Assistant Student
Rashauna McKinnon!

Rashauna McKinnon is a medical assistant student at East Ohio College. Before enrolling at East Ohio, Rashauna attended West Virginia Northern Community College at their Weirton campus. She advised their larger-than-normal classroom size made it somewhat difficult at times to get extra help from the instructors, so she started to look for a local college that was a better fit for her specific needs. Rashauna decided to transfer to East Ohio College because it was a local campus with a smaller student-to-instructor ratio, which helps the students feel more confident while providing better access to instructors when assistance is needed.

Rashauna chose the medical field because it’s a family thing. Many generations of her family have worked in various medical-related professions, and she has always had a strong desire to follow in their footsteps by helping and assisting with the medical needs of the local community. In addition, Rashauna has some prior experience in the medical field. She worked as a state-tested nursing assistant before college. In this position, she performed many duties, including aiding patients with their meals, monitoring their vitals, bathing, grooming patients, and assisting nurses and doctors with setting up medical procedures.

When asked what her favorite part of attending East Ohio College is, Rashauna said, “Creating bonds and friendships not only with students but with the instructors and staff as well is by far her favorite part of EOC.” Identifying her favorite teacher and class was a tough question to answer. Rashauna likes all of her instructors, but she really enjoys Mrs. Hedrick’s structure and style and named Anatomy and Physiology her favorite classes. Rashauna’s five-year plan is to work in a wonderful medical-related career that will allow her to help and assist people positively so they will remember. It could be in healthcare as a certified medical assistant, or she might continue her education and become a nurse.

In her spare time, Rashauna enjoys spending quality time with her family. When asked if she has any hobbies or special interests, she stated that she is a pretty good auto mechanic and enjoys spending time in the garage working side by side with her husband to complete all kinds of vehicle repairs.

Rashauna is very happy with her experience at East Ohio College and would absolutely recommend it to family and friends. The campus offers excellent classes along with the option of an online learning experience. It’s an ideal college for anyone looking to start a new career or a stay-at-home parent looking to earn a degree.
