East Ohio College is excited to recognize recent dental assisting graduate Janelle Taylor! Before attending EOC, Janelle attempted cosmetology school, but she did not feel that it was the right fit for her path in life. Janelle initially came to East Ohio for Medical Assisting but realized that she was not a fan of the needles used in most procedures. This led her to our Dental Assisting program. She felt that she could still provide great direct patient care in this program and not worry about her fear of needles.
“East Ohio College has provided me with a very easy place to learn, unlike some of the other institutions that I have seen,” Janelle said. She enjoyed the college’s small class sizes and direct contact with instructors. This was especially true in her clinical classes with Program Director Jamie Stine. “Mrs. Stine is an amazing program director who always helps her students. She is not just here for us in the classroom, but she cares about our personal lives as well. This is not something that you would find in many other colleges.”
Outside of the classroom, Janelle enjoys spending time with her dogs and collecting Starbucks memorabilia. Driving to class every day from Monaca, PA, provided an opportunity to stop and get an iced coffee every day, which is always helpful when you have an 8 a.m. lecture. “Even early morning classes are enjoyable with the instructors at East Ohio College. They understand that we all have different learning styles and work their best to accommodate us all as individual learners in the classroom.”
After her externship, Janelle was hired as a dental assistant at the site where she began her learning. “I loved the externship portion of the program because it gave me real-world experience in the field that I am now working in. The classroom and lab portions are great for the initial understanding of the material, but actually putting that knowledge to use felt great,” she said. During her externship, Janelle became a valuable part of the dental team by displaying professionalism, outstanding soft skills, and a thorough understanding of dental anatomy.
Janelle says, “If I had to do it all over again, I would. East Ohio College has become like a family to me. I would recommend the program to anyone in the area who is looking for a career in healthcare or business.”
