Hayley Sowinski – Student Highlight

Meet one of East Ohio College’s medical assisting students, Hayley Sowinski! Hayley previously attended the Community College of Beaver County with hopes of becoming a radiology technician. She quickly found that this was not the path for her. “Although that was a bit of a rough patch, everything works out for a reason, and I am glad that it landed me at East Ohio. I knew I wanted to be a medical assistant, but I wanted to earn a degree and not just a certification”. Upon visiting the East Ohio campus and meeting with our admissions team, Haley enrolled in the Medical Assisting Associate Degree program.

When considering programs, Hayley chose medical assisting because “I really enjoy taking care of people. Ever since I was a child, I have always wanted to work with orthopedics. When I was around 10 years old, I used to say that I wanted to put casts on people who had broken bones. When I really did my research on what medical assistants do, I realized that this is what I wanted to do for the rest of my life. I find orthopedics fascinating, and I really look forward to learning more about it. I am so thankful that I will be able to fulfill the career 10-year-old me dreamed of”.

Although she has enjoyed all of the faculty and staff at East Ohio, Hayley says, “My favorite teacher so far has been Mrs. Scott. I really enjoy having Mrs. Scott for my Pharmacology 2 class. The way she ran the class made learning an extremely hard topic very easy. I cannot wait to have her for more of my classes”.

When asked if she would recommend East Ohio, Hayley said, “Yes, I would refer a friend. I feel that anyone can excel at East Ohio. Not only with the education portion, but the social aspect of the school is amazing. It is very easy to make friends. Most of my friends are very social like I am. I think that all of my friends would enjoy East Ohio very much.” Hayley also enjoys the small class sizes and the one-on-one instruction and mentoring she receives from her instructors. “It makes learning easier. Every teacher here knows who everyone is, and they truly care about every student’s success”.
