Dakota Long – Student Highlight

Meet Medical Assisting Student Dakota Long!

Dakota Long is a current student in East Ohio College’s Medical Assisting program. She began her classes in February this year and hasn’t looked back! Dakota attended college before; however, she felt like she was missing the family-like environment she desired. After transferring to East Ohio, she knew she had found the right place. When asked why she chose East Ohio College, she said: “In addition to the family atmosphere, I enjoy being close to home. EOC has promising programs and friendly instructors.”

Dakota has worked in multiple restaurants in the East Liverpool area and is glad she gained valuable customer service work experience that will blend well in the medical field. Dakota chose the Medical Assisting program because she has always been interested in helping people; this felt like a great option. In particular, she is very impressed with the fast-track approach that East Ohio offers. Dakota described her favorite part of attending East Ohio as “a welcoming environment with caring and compassionate instructors.” Dakota also spoke fondly about her favorite instructor, Mrs. Scott, who she finds very understanding and always finds a way to make learning feel much easier.

Dakota is on a mission and has set goals for her life. She is hopeful that within five years, she will be happily married and working in her ideal career after graduation, which is assisting in a family medicine office. She will complete a 160-hour externship in a local office to gain valuable hands-on experience in a real medical environment. Dakota is very excited about her upcoming externship and can’t wait to learn skills from current medical professionals in her chosen field. This practice will no doubt assist her in reaching those five-year goals and hopefully secure her desired career, even before graduation.

In her spare time, Dakota enjoys art and writing stories. She has written a couple of mystery stories and is hopeful that someday they might catch the eye of a publisher and get published. Her favorite vacation was a trip to Gettysburg, and she really enjoyed its history and going ghost hunting. She went on a ghost walk but didn’t see anything on that trip but maybe the next one.

When asked about her overall experience at East Ohio College and whether or not she would recommend the school to a friend, she replied: “Yes, East Ohio is a great college, and it has a very welcoming atmosphere.” She has already made great friends at East Ohio and enjoys spending time with them between classes. Dakota joined student government and enjoys the comradery with other members. It’s a great way to make friends and make a difference here. Dakota thoroughly enjoys coming to class each day and is excited about continuing the rest of her journey here with her East Ohio family.
